Lottie Brunn was the informal keynoter at the First Women's Forum attended by at least 30 female jugglers on July 20, 1984 at the IJA summer festival in Las Vegas.  The Forum was organized by Karen Rothstein and Laura Green.  The Flamingo Club was founded at the Akron, Ohio summer IJA festival in 1987.  The club was a means for the women to get together for cocktails and try to find each other in the sea of men ... to get to know each other.  There were no mommies at that time, just wild and crazy women.

At the Rapid City convention in 1996 Laura Green established a table for the Flamingo Club to provide a place for kids and moms to rest and hang out.  She made a big eight-foot table cover and ordered a bunch of cheap stuff for kids to buy, but ended up giving the stuff away. Jennifer Salberg created a "kid corral" out of corrugated cardboard. At night we made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for jugglers for a contribution.

At the Women's Forum we decided that we should sponsor an award given to a promising girl juggler, to bring focus to girls and women in the sport. The Flamingo Award was established and the first recipient was named and presented with a bouquet of new juggling clubs. See award winners.

In Pittsburgh in 1997 the Flamingo Club really rocked. There was our first Kiddie Corral with lots of kids stuff, including arts and crafts, an art show with prizes, games and a changing table ... services for moms and kids including baby sitting. We hooked up teens with moms so that mom could juggle for an hour without baby. It was very successful. After the Renegade midnight show we provided sandwiches, fruit and drinks for donations.

The Flamingo Club has given an award every year since 1996 at the IJA summer festival to an outstanding young female juggler. The award winner is presented with a gift of new juggling props to inspire her to practice and continue the art form and encourage other girls to juggle also.

Thanks to Laura Green and Jen Salberg for historical information.

Here are some resource lists compiled by Mary Wilkins for women firsts, magazine articles, videos, books and web links featuring women and children jugglers.
